.

Mummy has found a new hobby at our campsite and she has drafted little me to help her finish the project! One of the campsite activities was “basket weaving” so Mummy checked with the campsite owner about signing up for the class. She was VERY EXCITED to learn that she could take a very quick lesson on how to make her own NANTUCKET BASKET!!!! Mummy was sooo happy because she has always wanted to learn how to make these beautiful little handwoven baskets. The teacher gave her a quick lesson and sent her back to our AIRSTREAM with a sample basket, and her homework assignment on how to get started on her very first NANTUCKET BASKET! I am helping her with the “staves.” Those are like the ribs of the basket. She needs about 50 of them for her basket and I am handing them to her to place evenly around the wooden base. After she gets them all placed around the mold, she needs to wet down all of the reeds and then let the whole thing dry overnight.  After 24 hours, we will find out what we need to do next. Mummy said she is NOT LEAVING MAINE until she completes her NANTUCKET BASKET! ?

Love baskets! Isn’t it interesting how the materials used are unique to the area— such as the beautiful sweetgrass baskets here in South Carolina! Have fun!

Millie I’m sure Mummy’s basket will be beautiful. My mom did basket weaving for a few years and made several lovely baskets which I treasure. Mummy will do a great job, and you all can treasure hers.

Hi Millie
That’s a wonderful thing Moro’s learning to do. I own one. I had it commissioned it from Oak and ivory in Oyster Harbor which isn’t to far from Hyannisport. Is mommy’s basket going to have a handle.
I’ll be anxious to see it when mommy’s done.
Have a wonderful day!!
Love you all!!

She isn’t going to put a handle on hers because that is a little more complicated than what she could learn in a quick camping class… so it is only an open basket but she is still excited to learn to do this.
