Mummy fixed another yummy dinner last night for Daddy and it was a WINNER!  This is a simple Southern meal that you will enjoy fixing for your family over and over again.  It is super easy to make and honestly, you just can’t mess this one up!  You can tweak it by upping the spice level to your liking or even adding additional spices.  If you like mushrooms, throw some of those into the sauce.  If you don’t have time to cream up your own potatoes, just use some instant potatoes, no one will notice and it will still taste yummy.  If you prefer, use rice instead.  If you are cutting back on starch, just serve the hamburger with the onion gravy.  You can do whatever you want with this meal but I promise, you will love it!!!  Let us know if you try any of our recipes… we love hearing back if your family liked one of our meals.

.

Hamburger Steak and Onion Gravy with Creamed Potatoes

.

1 1/2 pounds ground beef chuck

1 Tablespoon olive oil

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon coarse ground pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 Tablespoon dried parsley flakes

.

In a medium bowl, combine all of the ingredients and mash it all together with your hands until everything is well combined.  Form the hamburger meat into 6 patties and flatten them out to about 1/2″ thick.  In a large skillet add 1 teaspoon olive oil and 1 Tablespoon butter and melt until sizzling, then add the hamburger patties.  You will need to do this in 2 batches.  Cook them over medium heat until they are nicely seared on both sides and almost done.  Remove from the skillet and place them on a serving platter.  Save the pan drippings for your onion gravy.

.

Onion Gravy

.

1 medium sweet onion, sliced in small strips

1 Tablespoon butter plus the drippings from your hamburger pan

3 Tablespoons flour

3 teaspoons beef bouillon paste (I use BETTER THAN BOUILLON) plus 3 cups hot water to make a beef broth

.

After you have removed your hamburger patties from the skillet, add an additional tablespoon of butter to the drippings and then add your sliced onions.  Saute the onions over medium heat until they are soft and caramelized to a golden brown color.  Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir evenly over the onions.  Slowly pour in your prepared beef broth, stirring constantly.  Your sauce will begin to slowly thicken.  Bring this sauce to a simmer and then gently place each hamburger patty into the sauce mixture.  Continue to simmer until your gravy has thickened to the desired consistency and your burgers are cooked all the way through.

.

Serve with some creamed potatoes or rice, and garnish with a sprinkle of dried parsley flakes.

.

NOTE:  Please do not be tempted to give any of this to your sweet furbabies due to the onions that are in this dish!!!

.

Bone Appetit!

I’m laughing because I’ve eaten hamburger steak since I was a child. My Mom would go thru all that to make gravy but I don’t I just buy a jar of brown mushroom gravy LOL I always serve with “instant” mash potatoes I mean we are in a pandemic and it’s too hard for me to get and keep fresh potatoes. LOL and I too love peas with it! yummie!!! BUT consider this….. my grandmother made what she called “bird’s nests” you made a bread stuffing ( cubed bread, egg, salt, pepper, parsley, onion) then you squished it into balls….… Read more »

Brought back memories that I had forgotten. When the kids were young (all over 50 now) I made this a couple times a week. They loved it and it was so easy to make when you got home from work. Thanks for the memories! Never feed my Yorkies from the table. Love them too much.
