.

Mummy and Daddy started off the day by renting a cute little motorized scooter and zipping off on a tour to see a few of the covered bridges in the area and learn a little bit about the Amish people who live and work here. We stayed behind and slept late, which turned out to be a good thing because Mummy said it was  a HOT HOT HOT afternoon. They saw some really cool sights, including an Amish family in their horse and buggy, taking their miniature pony for a RIDE IN THE BACK!!! WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT ALL ABOUT??? Mummy wanted to chase them down and ask a few questions but they had to stay with the tour so she will never know!!! The old bridges were fascinating and the farms they passed were lovely. One wheat field had wheat drying that had been hand-raked and hand-tyed to dry in bundles… most everything here is done by horses who pull the equipment behind them. They didn’t see any modern farm equipment on the Amish farms. And look at the laundry handing on the line to dry!!! They hand wash and hand dry their clothes… washers and dryers ARE NOT ALLOWED! WOW… that’s a LOT OF WORK!!! Later in the day we all went for a car-ride to see more of the area, and Mummy and Daddy stopped to sample some of the FAMOUS Shoofly Pie and Amish Icecream! This is just a lovely, lovely part of the country. We are getting a bit of rain right now but hopefully this will cool things down a bit. Tonight we will have a quiet evening at our AIRSTREAM and celebrate as a family. Wherever you are, have a HAPPY AND SAFE FOURTH OF JULY!!! ??

Oh yes we are world famous for our Amish farms… Pennsylvania the Puppy Mill Capital ….. located in serene looking Amish farms….. now not ALL of them are puppy mill operators but none of them are nice to animals… it breaks my heart. I hope you enjoyed the shoo fly pie! it’s one of my favorites! I can’t wait to see you on your return to Pennsylvania… you’ll get to see something more cheerful… well not ALL cheerful I mean it is Gettysburg……

Steve and I used to go out there every two weeks when we lived in Philly. The farms are so pastoral. I loved going out there. I miss visiting. I even have two Amish friends out there. . I see on the weather maps the rain you are having. Stay dry. Enjoy

Hi Guys…Happy to hear you are having such a good time. When I lived in New York the Amish people used to bring baked goods to the Farmer’s Market every week. It was delicious. They are very hard working people. It has been raining here in Tampa off and on all day. This is my first year without my little Ollie. He was so scared of the Fire Works and here they also have it on New Year”s Eve. I always stayed home so I could hold him. Well, have fun tomorrow.

Dear Sweet Millie LaRue, Please thank your Mummy for posting all of those lovely photos! You are indeed in a beautiful part of the country–I hope to drive through it myself someday. It will be a slow, slow trip because I stop whenever something catches my interest, and that is A LOT! Ha! Maybe by then I will have my own little yorkie to go with me. I’m glad you’re celebrating at the Airstream tonight. You girls will feel nice and safe with Mummy and Daddy there with you. I’m staying home with Ivy (cat) tonight too. She doesn’t enjoy… Read more »

So happy you had a wonderful day, despite the heat. The covered bridges would be my favorite to see (maybe some day). Mia and I are chillin’ tonite, so I can cuddle with her during our disrespectful neighbors and their firecrackers/fireworks (which are not allowed in our mobile home park). She gets so scared, shakes like a leaf! Gearing up for tomorrow night, Mia is so ready to give you kisses. Til then, have a quiet evening, and stay cool. Hugs

When we lived in Indiana we frequently went to Shipshawanna which is an Amish community in Northern Indiana. Three days feels like ine has been hone a week in the wonderful laid back life that they lead. I have great respect for their commitment to community and faith.

Shoofly pie is mainly made of molasses… it is very sweet and attracts FLIES! That is why they call it SHOO-fly Pie because that is what you are saying as you wave your hand over your pie…. swatting away the flies!!! ???

I too was going to mention the capital of Puppy Mills is in Pa, especially Lancaster, however the state has so much more to offer. I live about 45 minutes away actually in Maryland but visit Lancaster often. The Amish are always very nice to me. the trick is never approach them with any type of camera /video recorder. Respecting their religion and beliefs is most important. The food is AMAZING . You must try the homemade jams and Jellies. The Apple butter is to dye for, I think the girls would love a tiny little bite. Youi know just… Read more »
